Yelp for Handymen: Claim Your Page, Reviews and Ads Explained
How to claim your Yelp page as a handyman, why good reviews get filtered, how to respond, and whether Yelp ads make sense. Includes reply templates.

Claim your free Yelp business page, make it complete and accurate, and respond professionally to every review. Do not ask customers for Yelp reviews or pay for fake ones, because Yelp discourages solicitation and its software filters reviews it does not trust. Whether Yelp ads are worth buying depends on your market, so test with a small, capped budget and judge by cost per booked job.
This guide covers claiming the page, what the review filter means for you, how to respond to praise and complaints, and how to decide on ads. Yelp's features and policies change, so confirm the details in Yelp for Business help before you act.
Should a handyman bother with Yelp?
Yelp's usefulness varies a lot by city and by trade. In some metro areas homeowners search it first for home services. In others, Google, Nextdoor and word of mouth dominate. You can find out without guessing:
- Search Yelp for "handyman" in your own ZIP code. How many listings have recent reviews?
- Search Google for "handyman near me" in the same area. Does Yelp show up in the top results?
- Ask your last ten customers where they looked. Write down the answers.
If Yelp barely appears and nobody mentions it, claim the page for accuracy and move on. If competitors have dozens of recent reviews and Yelp ranks, it deserves more attention.
Even then, Yelp should be one channel among several. Read our other marketing posts on Nextdoor, Facebook and marketplace lead platforms before you decide where to spend time.
Step 1: Claim your Yelp business page
Even if you never plan to advertise, an unclaimed page can show wrong hours, a wrong phone number or a missing description. Claiming it lets you fix that for free.
- Search for your business on Yelp. If it is listed, choose the option to claim it. If it is not listed, add the business through Yelp for Business.
- Verify ownership using the method Yelp offers, such as phone, email or a code.
- Fill in the page completely (checklist below).
- Add a link to your website or booking page.
Page completeness checklist
- Business name exactly as customers see it elsewhere.
- Categories: choose the most accurate ones available, such as handyman. Do not add categories you are not qualified for.
- Service area: be honest and specific.
- Phone, website and hours.
- Description: a few clear sentences on what you do.
- Specialties or services: the jobs you actually want.
- Photos: real finished work, not stock images. Get customer permission and avoid showing addresses or identifiable details.
- Licensing and insurance: include only what is true and what your state requires. Check your state contractor board for what applies to handyman work where you operate.
A description to adapt
[Business Name] is a handyman service for homeowners in [City and nearby]. We handle small repairs and installs: doors, drywall patching, trim, caulking, fixture swaps, shelves, TV mounting and honey-do lists. You get a written quote before we start. Insured [if true]. Call or text [number].
Step 2: Understand the review filter
Yelp uses automated software to decide which reviews are "recommended" and which are not. Reviews it does not recommend appear in a separate section and do not count toward your star rating. Yelp has explained that this is meant to protect consumers from fake or biased reviews.
What that means for you, based on how Yelp describes its system:
- A genuine, happy customer's review may be filtered. This often happens when the reviewer is new to Yelp or has few reviews.
- The software looks at the reviewer's overall activity, not just your job. We cannot see how it weighs those signals, so we will not guess at specifics.
- Filtered reviews can later become recommended, and recommended ones can later be filtered. The status can change.
- You cannot pay to change the filter, and you should be skeptical of anyone who says otherwise.
Why you should not ask for reviews on Yelp
Yelp has long advised businesses not to ask customers for reviews and says solicited reviews are more likely to be filtered. Review its current guidance before you do anything. For most handymen, the safe approach is:
- Do not ask for Yelp reviews directly or run a campaign pushing customers there.
- Do not offer discounts, gifts or anything else for reviews. That breaks Yelp's rules and consumer protection rules in many places.
- Do not review your own business or write reviews of competitors.
- Do not use a service that promises Yelp reviews.
Listing your Yelp page as one of the places customers can find you is different from asking for a review. Check Yelp's current guidelines for what wording and displays they allow.
Where to ask for reviews instead
Build your review count where asking is allowed. Google, for example, lets businesses share a review link. Read our guide on how to get handyman reviews for timing, scripts and a repeatable process. Do not treat Yelp as the only place customers will find you.
Step 3: Respond to Yelp reviews
Responding is free and shows future customers how you handle problems. Keep every reply short, calm and professional.
Responding to a positive review
Thank you, [Name]. It was a pleasure helping with your [project]. If anything else around the house needs attention, we are here. - [Your name], [Business]
Do not paste the same reply each time. Mention something specific.
Responding to a mixed review
Thanks for the feedback, [Name]. I am glad the [part that worked] turned out well. I am sorry the [issue] was not what you expected. I would like to make it right. Please call me at [number] and I will arrange a visit.
Responding to a negative review
- Wait before replying. Do not post while angry.
- Check the facts in your job notes, quote and photos. The job site notes guide shows what to record.
- Reply once, publicly, briefly.
- Move the conversation offline.
- Offer a remedy if one is fair. Warranty issues are covered in our warranty work guide.
Hi [Name], thank you for telling us. I am sorry the work did not meet your expectations. I would like to understand what happened and fix it if it is something we can address. Please call me at [number] or email [email].
Never do these
- Argue, mock or accuse the customer.
- Reveal private details about the job or the customer.
- Threaten legal action in the reply.
- Offer money to remove a review. Yelp rules and consumer-protection rules may apply.
- Post fake reviews to bury a bad one.
Reporting a review
If a review breaks Yelp's content policy (for example, it is about a different business, includes threats or hate speech, or is clearly posted by a competitor), you can flag it for Yelp to evaluate. Yelp decides what to do. A review that is merely harsh or unfair is usually left up.
Step 4: Decide about Yelp ads
Yelp offers paid advertising for businesses. Pricing models and tools change, and we are not going to quote figures. Ask Yelp for the current structure and read the contract carefully.
Questions to ask before you pay
- How am I charged: per click, per impression, per lead, or a flat fee?
- Is there a minimum budget or a contract term?
- Can I set a monthly cap?
- How do I cancel and what happens to my page?
- Which areas and keywords will the ads show on?
- How will I measure the leads that come in?
Run a controlled test
If you decide to try ads:
- Set a cap you can afford to lose entirely.
- Run for one billing cycle, then review.
- Use a dedicated phone number or a code word so you can attribute leads. The door hanger guide explains tracking numbers.
- Track every lead through to the paid invoice.
The math (illustrative numbers only)
- Ad spend for the month: $300
- Leads (calls and messages): 15
- Jobs booked: 4
- Cost per booked job: $300 / 4 = $75
- Average revenue per job: $350
- Gross profit per job (after materials, direct labor and travel): $120
- Profit after ad cost: (4 x $120) - $300 = $180
Yelp ads make sense only if your own numbers look like that or better. If you pay $75 per booked job but average gross profit is $60, you are losing money on each job. Use the same cost-per-booked-job method from the lead platforms guide.
Be careful about promises
Beware of anyone who promises a specific number of leads, a ranking or a way to remove or suppress negative reviews. We cannot verify such claims and neither should you. Get promises in writing or treat them as marketing.
Step 5: Turn Yelp traffic into jobs
Leads from any directory are only valuable if you convert them:
- Answer fast. Quick replies win more of the people who contact several handymen.
- Ask for photos to quote accurately.
- Send a written, itemized quote the same day. See how to write a handyman quote.
- Follow up once if you have not heard back in a day or two.
- Invoice promptly and make it easy to pay by card.
A tool like HandyBook can send line-item quotes with online acceptance and invoices with pay-by-card links, which speeds up that conversion path. The more of it you can do from your phone between jobs, the fewer leads you lose.
A realistic monthly Yelp routine
- Weekly (10 minutes): Check for new reviews and messages. Reply to each.
- Monthly (20 minutes): Update photos with recent finished work. Check hours, phone and service area.
- Quarterly (30 minutes): Count leads from Yelp and compare cost and result against other channels.
That is enough for a free listing. If Yelp is not producing jobs after a few months, let it ride as a low-effort listing and invest the time elsewhere.
FAQ
Is Yelp worth it for a handyman?
It depends on your city and whether homeowners there use Yelp for home services. Claim the free page regardless, then check whether it sends you leads before you invest more time or money.
Why did Yelp filter my good reviews?
Yelp's software decides which reviews to recommend, and it considers the reviewer's activity and other signals it does not fully disclose. Filtered reviews from real customers are frustrating, but you cannot pay or pressure Yelp to change them.
Can I ask customers to review me on Yelp?
Yelp has historically told businesses not to ask for reviews. Check its current guidelines, and build reviews on platforms where asking is allowed, such as Google.
Should I pay for Yelp ads as a handyman?
Only after testing with a small capped budget and calculating cost per booked job. If the cost is below your gross profit per job, it may be worth continuing.
Can I get a bad Yelp review removed?
Only if it violates Yelp's content policy, and Yelp makes that call. Otherwise, reply professionally and let your other reviews balance it.
