Creating a Job

A job is the central record for any piece of work — from a one-hour faucet swap to a multi-day reno. Quotes, invoices, materials, time, and photos all attach to a job.

How to create a job

  1. Go to Jobs in the sidebar
  2. Click New Job (top right)
  3. Fill in the form (details below)
  4. Click Create Job

What's on the New Job form

The form is grouped into sections.

From Quote / From Template (optional shortcuts). If you have sent or accepted quotes, a green From Quote dropdown lets you pull one forward — it fills the title, customer, address, estimated cost, and notes. A blue From Template dropdown pre-fills from a saved job template.

Job Details

  • Job Title (required) — what shows in your Jobs list, e.g. "Kitchen faucet replacement"
  • Category — pick from the standard category list
  • Priority — Normal, Urgent, or Emergency
  • Description — scope, issues, anything useful

Customer & Location

  • Customer — optional; pick from your customers
  • Service Address — auto-fills from the customer if blank
  • Assign To — assign one team member (only shows if you have a team)

Schedule & Estimate

  • Schedule this job — tick this to set a Date and optional Time. Leave it unticked to save the job as a lead.
  • Estimated Hours and Estimated Cost ($)
  • Notes — internal notes
  • Recurring Job — tick to set a repeat interval (Weekly, Biweekly, Monthly, Quarterly)

Status on creation

If you set a schedule date, the job is created as Scheduled. Otherwise it's created as a Lead.

Drafts are saved automatically

If you start filling in the form and leave, HandyBook keeps a local draft. Next time you open New Job you'll see "Restored your saved draft" — keep editing, or click Discard draft to start fresh.

Editing a job

Open the job and click Edit in the header to change details, or click the title to rename it inline. Use the status dropdown in the header to move it through the pipeline.

FAQ

Do I need a customer first? No — the customer field is optional. You can add one later.

What if I don't know the price yet? Leave it as a lead, then build a quote when you're ready. You can pull the quote forward into the job afterward.

Can one job link to a quote and an invoice? Yes. From the job, use Create Quote and Create Invoice. Once linked, the job shows quick cards for each.

How do I save a job as a reusable template? Open the job and click Save as Template in the header.

Can I delete a job? Yes — open the job and use the trash icon in the header. Deletion asks you to confirm.
