Split Payments
Sometimes a customer pays part on a card and part in cash, or across two cards. The Split tender handles it.
When to split
- "I'll put $200 on a card and the rest in cash"
- "Half on this card, half on that card"
- "Cash for most of it, a check for the balance"
How to split
- Build the cart and tap Charge $X
- In the Take payment dialog, tap the Split tab
- The first row pre-fills with the full total as Cash — adjust it
- For each row, pick a method — Cash, Card, Check, or Other — and enter an amount
- Tap Add tender to add another row; tap the trash icon to remove one
- Watch the status line at the bottom:
- Balanced (green) — amounts equal the total
- Overpaid (change due) — cash exceeds the balance; change is owed
- Short (amber) — not enough entered yet
- When it reads Balanced (or overpaid on cash), tap Charge $X
The Charge button stays disabled until the split balances.
Change on splits
If a cash row overpays the non-cash portion, the dialog computes the change due and shows it on the receipt. Card and check rows don't generate change.
How it's recorded
The sale's payment method is recorded as split, with each tender stored on the sale. POS reports and reconciliation attribute each portion to its method, so your cash and card totals stay accurate.
FAQ
Is there a maximum number of tenders? No hard cap — add as many rows as you need with Add tender, though most splits are two or three.
Can I charge a card on file in a split? No — the Register doesn't pull saved cards. Run each card on your terminal and record the Card portion.
Can I split a tip across methods? The Register doesn't collect tips at checkout, so there's nothing to split.
Does split work with Stripe Terminal? Each card portion runs on your terminal; cash and check portions are entered on screen.
A customer changed their mind after I charged — now what? Each completed sale is final. Open it under Point of Sale → Sales and issue a Refund (or Void within 24h). See POS Refunds & Returns.
